7 podcasts I love listening to in the studio

Updated: Jul 11, 2019

Do you have favorite podcast to listen to while you create? Or maybe you need to freshen up your podcast list with some new shows? I listen to *tons* of podcasts on a daily basis, so I wanted to share some of my favorites with you! These are in no particular order, because I can’t pick a favorite! They are are so different that they are tough to compare or rank.

Reply All. This is a podcast about wild stuff that happens in and around the internet. Everything from phishing, to mysteries of the web, to understanding obscure memes, to whether Instagram is listening to your conversations. I’ve honestly learned SO much from it, and there are so many entertaining and interesting stories!

Ologies. Y’all know I love science, and this is a science podcast for *everyone*. The host, Alie Ward, is so delightful and funny, and she interviews all sorts of people. Her ‘ologies’ range from lepidopterology (the study of butterflies) to a kalology (the study of beauty) to thanatology (the study of death) to ornithology (the study of birds).

Being Boss. This is the first business podcast I started listening to a few years ago! The two hosts, Emily and Kathleen are great and I’ve learned so many things from them over the years. While they don’t post podcasts as frequently these days, they have a ton of episodes to go back and listen to. Sometimes I dig back through the archive and re-listen to my favs!

Ear Hustle. This one isn’t for everyone, but I find it really fascinating. This podcast is about life inside prison, specifically San Quentin prison in California. So many powerful stories, some uplifting, some pretty bleak. The show discusses the struggles and unique challenges of prison life, as well as issues inmates face when they get out. It’s a look into a world that I know nothing about!

Design Matters with Debbie Millman. Debbie is a phenomenal interviewer, and she has really incredible diversity of creative guests. Everything from illustrators to authors to graphic designers to photographers. She digs down into their past, creative process, inspiration, etc and it's always an interesting look into the mind of a creative.

Happier with Gretchen Rubin. Gretchen Rubin is an author that has written books about habits, human nature, and happiness (I've read a few of them!). Her podcast (co-hosted by her sister) is a light-hearted and upbeat show where they talk about ways to improve happiness. These are often hyper-practical, which I appreciate! This podcast is a nice break from the more serious podcasts I listen to!

It’s been a minute with Sam Sanders. This is an NPR podcast (one of many I listen to) and I love the host, Sam Sanders. He is one of my all time fav NPR guys, and his podcast is so fun. It always covers a variety of topics from the last week of news, and is in an entertaining and dynamic style. Not a stodgy NPR show! I also love how Sam brings on really diverse guests for his weekly deep dive interview (many people of color and/or LGBTQ folks).

To be honest, I have about 25-30 other podcasts that I regularly listen to! A few other notables are Radiolab, The Cut on Tuesdays, Spooked, and that long-standing classic, This American Life.

Someday I’ll get on that audio-book train, but for now I’m 100% team podcast while in the studio.
